A1Filament, a 3D printing material manufacturer, has officially launched its Kickstarter campaign as it looks to raise $465,000 to mass produce its bio-compostable filament range.
Made up of European technology professionals, North American marketers and Chinese production experts, A1Filament says it wants to make improvements to a sector of the additive manufacturing space that has perhaps been taken for granted.
On the company’s Kickstarter page, its commitment to making a high-quality product is made clear. A1Filament also pledges to produce filament without emitting carbon or any other pollutants.
Over a period of six years, A1Filament carried out some research into filaments on the 3D printing market, and exactly what would cause jamming of filament during a 3D print. Now, the company believes it has solved the issue, and sees the transition from currently-available filaments to its brand of filaments will mirror that of the smartphone’s dominance in the mobile phone sector.
“We believe in the industry and we believe that, just like people weren’t accepting of defective phones and dropped calls, they won’t tolerate ‘bad’ filament for much longer either,” reads A1Filament’s Kickstarter page. “We believe that our unrelenting and ongoing commitment to find and produce the best plastic filaments available will meet with the most important approval of all – yours.”

By pledging $1,000 via A1Filament's Kickstarter campaign, backers receive 24 rolls of filament in colours of their choice, as well as another gift of the backer's choice from a selected range.
A1Filament currently offers PLA, BIO+ and ABS filaments, produced in a factory which will be carbon-neutral with zero pollutants. The biodegradable filaments, certified as compostable, are available in 16 different colours in sizes of 1.75mm and 3.0mm, and with pantone shades remaining constant. Such were the company’s initial results, an unnamed government agency has showed its support by supplying A1Filament with a 90,000 square-foot warehouse and production facility, rent-free for four years.
Now, they are reaching out for support from what it hopes will be its future customer base. Financial pledges of certain amounts will earn backers a host gifts, all of which include a number of rolls of the filament.
