Local Motors Mobifactory aims to join co-creators and make the public more aware of 3D printing.
We’re now bringing innovation, co-creation and education to a town near you; starting with Washington D.C.
Opening to the public on June 11th, the Local Motors Mobifactory is based in Crystal City - the high-tech urban neighbourhood south of the nation’s capital. This smaller, mobile-version of our Phoenix and Knoxville, Tenn. microfactories provides opportunities to reach more co-creators and make the public more aware of 3D printing technology as a whole.
One of the most popular attractions is expected to be our free, weekly 20-minutes courses on drift triking. Staff members will provide basic instructions on how to operate the electric Verrado before handing them off to the public to test ride and enjoy for themselves. Drifting as a sport and recreational activity is growing at rapid paces in New Zealand, the U.S. and United Kingdom.
There will be free weekly courses offered on the basics of 3D printing as well. The Strati, which was printed right on the floor of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this past January, will also be on display. It represents an integral step in the evolution from imaginative 3D-printed vehicle to our ultimate goal of a highway-ready, electric 3D-printed car by the end of 2016.
We are currently challenging our Co-Creation Community, via PROJECT [REDACTED], to come up with economical, feasible ideas for a completely direct digital manufactured (DDM) vehicle ready for the road. Submissions will be accepted through June 15. Voting on said entries to pick the grand prize winner will take place the week thereafter.
Attendees will also be able to see and experience the Local Motors Rally Fighter - the world’s first co-created vehicle. Each of these custom-made, luxury off-road prerunners is built at our microfactories as a two-weekend experience with our engineers and the eventual owner. There will only be 2,000 total made.
