Star Wars 16inch Figurine
Disney's 3D Printed Star Wars figurine will set you back $1,500
At 26 inches Yoda likes to think of himself as the smallest member of the Jedi Council but in the land of 3D printing he’s a relative giant, but Disney’s new D-Tech Me service is fast catching up the wise one.
Disney launched their Star Wars Weekends at the excellently named Darth Mall last year, complete with a 3D Scanning and 3D printing service powered by 3D Systems. One was able to purchase a 7-inch figurine of your head in a variety of Star Wars situations; on the body of a Stormtrooper or in an X-Wing Pilot suit, or even in a state of Carbon Freeze.
As Star Wars hype goes into Hyperdrive due to the open auditions and rumours that filming for the latest batch in the franchise may or may not have started, Disney are upgrading their D-Tech Me experience and now offering massive 16-inch prints, over half the size of actual Yoda!
The ten-minute scanning processes uses the world’s highest-resolution, single-shot 3D face scanner created by Disney’s Imagineering scientists with Disney Research labs. Your face is then placed onto a body of your choosing and printed, however the 16-inch model is going to set you bag a staggering $1499.95 plus shipping, plus sales tax!
That might seem like a staggering amount but the Star Wars merchandise trade has made in excess of $20 billion since the series began in the late 70s. One figure in particular sold recently for £10,200 GBP! Since acquiring the rights to the Star Wars franchise Disney have stepped the fading Star Wars paraphernalia trade up once more and the 3D printed models are a sign of Disney moving the brand forward.
These 3D Printed models are designed to give Star Wars fans a slice of their own personal Star Wars memorabilia. Both the 7-inch and 16-inch models are printed on a Z-Corp machine in full colour and once you’ve been scanned you can expect your model in 7-8 weeks.
