New Desktop Metal Studio System + to deliver higher resolution printing.
Desktop Metal has today launched the next generation of its office-friendly Studio System metal 3D printer and new fleet configuration aimed at low volume production.
The new Studio System +, which will replace the original model going forward, is said to deliver a higher resolution and allows users to print small metal parts with fine details.
The new machine retains all of the key features of its predecessor which debuted at RAPID + TCT last year as a faster and lower cost metal 3D printing solution aimed at rapid prototyping safely in an office environment. The Studio System + now offers a swappable high resolution printhead which the company says will deliver sintered voxels as small as 240 microns in the XY axes and 45 microns in Z. This level of detail makes the system ideal for applications in consumer electronics, medical devices and automotive industries.
A new retort box design has also been introduced to increase thermal uniformity and part quality while live streaming of the build and software improvements including automatic mould lock prevention, part positioning and fleet management, have been added to increase productivity. In addition, new stackable shelving for the debinding and sintering steps of the process will increase throughput for batch processing and the option to connect to external gas tanks or a house gas line, is said to reduce the cost of consumables and cost-per-part.
“As our office-friendly systems are making their way to customers throughout the country, we’re excited to announce the launch Studio System+ and Studio Fleet which together offer enhanced features for metal prototyping and low volume production,” said Ric Fulop, CEO and Co-founder of Desktop Metal. “Engineers and designers who are looking to push the limits of metal 3D printing with small parts or parts with fine details can now achieve even higher-resolution, with a customisable system configuration for greater process efficiency and throughput right on the shop floor.”
Configurable Studio Fleet system designed for low to mid volume production.
The original system is now being shipped to existing pre-order customers and will continue to be available until early October. For those who have placed orders on the original system, there is an option to upgrade to the new machine with a discount. The Studio System+ is priced at 60,000 USD or 160,000 USD with accompanying debinding and sintering hardware.
Also announced today is a new configurable Studio Fleet option which allows users to scale up their capabilities for low to mid volume production. At launch, the Studio Fleet is available in two configurations including three Studio System+ machines, one debinder and one furnace, or five machines, two debinders and one furnace. Desktop Metal says the smaller option equates to around a 200% increase in throughput for a 50% increase in system cost with the larger configuration offering a 400% increase and 100% increase in system cost.
