DSM Toyota Motorsport
DSM, a global science-based company, has entered into a partnership with Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) which will see the automotive company benefit from its materials and technology.
The alliance will involve all DSM businesses, including Engineering Plastics, Dyneema – the supplier of an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fibre of the same name, and Somos, its 3D printing materials branch.
Toyota Motorsport, in addition to its renowned work in automotive and motorsport disciplines, offers a wide range of technical services. It develops, tests and manufactures high-performance parts, and is one of many companies to have adopted additive manufacturing for use internally and for external customers. Through this agreement, DSM will act as TMG’s preferred material and product provider. The motorsport company will work to develop and pilot new engineering solutions using DSM’s high performance materials and products with a view to using them in potential automotive applications. TMG will also feed back to DSM and become a test user for defined projects.
“We are looking forward to extending our cooperation with DSM as a dedicated technology partner,” said Gerard Winstanley, Manager Future Production Technologies & Processes, Fabrication and Additive Manufacturing at TMG. “Our relationship has developed strongly over the last few years and significantly enhanced our capabilities as well as contributing to DSM’s product development. TMG’s mission is to push the boundaries of automotive technology for motorsport and road car applications both for Toyota projects and also those of our third-party customers. We believe this partnership will support that.”
Hugo da Silva, VP of DSM’s Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing business added: “Our materials already have a strong reputation in the 3D printing community, and as we grow our portfolio to support the 3D printing revolution, we are convinced we can do much more. We already have worked with Toyota Motorsport on optimising our new Somos Taurus for real-world motorsport applications, and this agreement will enable us to collaborate even more closely.”
Golnar Motahari Pour, President of DSM Dyneema, also expressed her excitement about the agreement and expects by working with an ‘automotive front-runner’ will be able to ‘expand our horizons further.’
