Ramon Pastor and Christoph Schell cut the ribbon at HP's new Centre of Excellence in Barcelona this summer. 

Christoph Schell is to leave his role as HP Inc’s Head of 3D Printing and Digital Manufacturing to become the company’s first Chief Commercial Officer.

HP Inc. was formed on November 1^st, 2015 as Hewlett Packard Company split into two separate entities, the other off-shoot being HP Enterprise. Since, HP Inc. has been operating without a CCO, but, come November, Schell will assume those responsibilities, leaving his current post after just one year. Ramon Pastor, Vice President and General Manager of HP’s 3D Printing business, will occupy the role as Head of 3D Printing and Digital Manufacturing on an interim basis.

Schell was appointed Head of 3D Printing and Digital Manufacturing in place of the outgoing Stephen Nigro, who retired at the start of 2019 having headed the company’s 3D printing efforts since the launch of Multi Jet Fusion technology. While Schell has only spent twelve months at the helm of HP’s 3D Printing business, the last year has been routinely busy for the division. 

Having launched its Metal Jet technology in the preceding few months, HP has continued to work with partners to refine the process and develop applications. It has also seen millions of parts printed on its polymer-based technology, many of them in-house in a ‘HP on HP’ drive that is significantly disrupting its own supply chain. HP has also expanded its product portfolio in that time, bringing to market the 5200 series to help users on their way to achieving volume production with 3D printing. SmileDirectClub is a company who is in the process of doing just that, and at RAPID + TCT in May it was announced the clear aligner manufacturer has taken on 49 Multi Jet Fusion machines. The following month, the company opened the tenth building at its Barcelona campus, a 150,000 square-foot centre of excellence which will focus on application development.

As Schell steps up to take the CCO position at HP Inc, the company will also implement Enrique Lores as its new CEO, replacing Dion Weisler. Additionally, there will be a few more changes to the management structure throughout the business, helping, per Lores and Schell in an interview with CRN, to simplify the company’s structure.
