A selection of the 38 finalists in this year's purmundus challenge.
The organisers of the purmundus challenge, the annual international 3D printing competition, have unveiled the names of this year's finalists ahead of the Formnext trade show this month where winners will be announced.
Now in its seventh year, the theme is 'beyond 3D printing' and invited participants to submit innovative product design concepts that show the potential of additive technologies. The 38 finalists span 18 countries and forward-looking concepts across medicine, 4D printing, bionics, mobility, safety and packaging, fashion, jewellery, lifestyle and more. There are also two new 3D printing technologies and a new material featured in the mix.
Projects include Sandvik's smash-proof 3D printed guitar, Diehl Aviation's 3D printed curtain comfort header, and a clock which explores the use of sugar crystals as a constructive biomaterial.

Winners will be selected by a panel and announced in a ceremony on 21st November at 5pm in the AM4U area (11.1, D29) on the show floor. Entries will be judged on their benefits in terms of use, economy and aesthetics, in addition to the design and overall innovation.
A total of 30,000 Euros in awards are up for grabs including the prestigious purmundus challenge trophy with prizes for first, second and third place, plus "special mention" and "innovation prize" awards. New this year, there will also be a category called "simulation driven design by Altair". Finally, visitors to the show will be able to vote for the winner of a special "people's choice" prize.
Exhibits for the 2019 purmundus challenge will be held at Formnext from 19 to 22 November 2019 at Messe Frankfurt, stand 12.1, E09.
