Adidas 3D Runner
The 3D Runner is said to give athletes the best running experience ever.
Sportswear giant, Adidas has announced its first ever 3D-printed shoe, gifted to selected medal winners from this year’s Olympics in Rio, will be available for public purchase.
The aptly named 3D Runner are trainers designed to enhance the performance of sprinters. A limited-edition range, the trainers are set to retail at around $333.
Built with a webbed, 3D-printed midsole and an outsole structure that is stimulated in specific high-impact areas – essentially parts of the shoe subjected to the most pressure during a run – the 3D Runner is said to give athletes the best running experience ever. Its intricate, thoughtful design allows the trainer to be increasingly flexible and durable, as well as being more comfortable.
The extra comfort comes from the shoe being customised around the user’s foot. Using their footprint, Adidas has been able to structure the trainer to a tailor fit. 3D Runners are also equipped with an engineered 3D design that boasts varying densities across the black Primeknit upper. Additionally, the trainers feature a 3D-printed heel counter that is directly integrated into the midsole.
The 3D Runner is the first time Adidas has brought a product to the market, whose final design is 3D-printed. And they have hinted that there will be more to follow.
“This is just the beginning,” Mikal Peveto, senior director of Adidas’ Future team said. “Creating customised shoes based on an individual’s footprint – including their running style, foot shape, performance needs and personal preferences – is a north star for the industry and Adidas is leading with cutting edge innovations.”
While Adidas’ latest innovative production may revolutionise running, the 3D Runners are only available for purchase in limited quantities. The Adidas Confirmed app can be used to sign up for a pair, though New York reservations have already opened. Pairs can be picked up at Adidas NYC, the brand’s new flagship store, as well as in London and Tokyo, from Thursday December 15th.
