Clariant, a specialty chemicals company, has stepped up its additive manufacturing activities by announcing the launch of a dedicated 3D printing business.
The company is aiming to provide premium and customised filaments to a market experiencing rapid growth globally. It will call on years of experience in the tailoring of polymers for an array of end market applications with pigments, additive and masterbatches, to bring to market high-grade 3D printing filaments and specially made solutions.
Clariant takes an inclusive approach when developing materials for its customers, working closely with them on polymer, additive and colorant selection as they address end-use conditions like sunlight exposure, flame retardency and electrical properties. In addition to the tailored materials Clariant will seek to offer through the new business, it is also set to provide general high-quality materials, in a number of different sizes to meet the differing needs of customers. As is common practice, Clariant prints and tests its materials to ensure their printability and required consistency and high quality.
The Swiss chemicals company has sought to increase its presence in the additive market as the technology becomes increasingly adopted and applied in the manufacture of functional parts. It recognises the processes’ proficiency in designing complex components, and believes it can help to produce better quality products with its tailored and high-quality filaments.
“At Clariant, we have all the capabilities to produce high-grade ready-to-print 3D printer filaments,” said Richard Haldimann, Head of New Business Development at Clariant. “We are experienced in delivering specialised and tailored solutions to customers via our Plastics & Coatings business. The existing Clariant production infrastructure provides the [new] 3D printing business with a global footprint to offer desired 3D printer filaments across the world.”
