HP has announced its FitStation powered by HP platform which will deliver custom-fitted footwear through a combination of 3D scanning, dynamic gait analysis and the company’s Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printing technology.
Providing customers with individualised 3D printed insoles and custom footwear, the FitStation forms part of HP’s mission to reinvent manufacturing with the use of 3D technologies. The hardware and software platform captures 3D scans of the customer’s foot, taking foot pressure measurements and conducting gait analysis, to create digital profiles of each foot. The data will then be sent to HP’s MJF 3D printer to manufacture the insole.
“FitSation is a truly disruptive platform that will improve people’s lives and change the way people purchase footwear and shoe insoles,” said Louis Kim, Global Head of Immersive Computing, Personal Systems, HP. “We are reinventing the footwear shopping experience, bringing a level of customisation and personalisation never before seen. We are stitching HP’s capabilities in 3D scanning and 3D printing to bring this Blended Reality vision to life and are working with leading partners within the footwear industry to develop this revolutionary platform.”

Already, HP has found two partners to pilot its FitStation technology: Superfeet and Steitz Secura. The former is a major player in the insoles market, providing over-the-counter products – It will feature the platform across 4,000 retail locations where the business has a presence. Meanwhile, the latter is a safety shoe specialist located in Germany, and is to harness the FitStation to support its service of providing comfortable, preventative health and safety footwear products.
“For 40 years, we have set the standard for shape and fit. Until today, the technology to deliver a 3D printed insole that meets Superfeet’s exacting standards didn’t exist,” said Eric Hayes, Chief Marketing Officer at Superfeet. “Our new solution allows us to create the most individualised shape and fit on the planet.”
Michael Huth, Steitz Secura CEO added: “This footwear innovation campaign move us to the technological forefront of the industry. The concept of customised safety shoes is a true word innovation and will be the benchmark for the future.”
HP’s digital foot scanning platform enable customers to create their own digital profile and purchase 3D printed customised insoles, and design their own customised footwear from specific brands and retailers.
