3D Printhuset’s BOD2 construction 3D printer has been selected by Kamp C, after the Belgian organisation concluded a comprehensive EU tender process.
The system is an updated version of the construction printer, which was used to construct 3D Printhuset’s office hotel, The BOD, hence the name of the technology. It has been brought about after the success of that project, fixing a host of features, making output more precise and robust, and also ensuring the printer can build faster. The BOD2 also comes in a range of sizes thanks to its modular system. Each module is around 2.5 metres in length, and each BOD2 machine consists of a gantry system with a minimum of one X-module; two Y-modules; and four Z-models.
Kamp C has opted for the BOD2 version 444 which can print buildings up to 9.5 metres in length and 8.3 metres high. Its print head is also said to have the potential capability of moving at a rate of 1 metre a second, meaning the 50-squre-metre BOD building could have been printed in a few hours.
“Following our own BOD project, we received many requests for the delivery of multiple sizes of printers,” commented Michael Holm, Development Manager, 3D Printhuset. “We therefore knew that the new BOD2 printer had to be modular such that it would be very easy for our customers to quickly find the printer with the size that they wanted. We also knew how to improve this second version, as we learned great many things from doing The BOD with our first printer.”
“The printer will be extruding almost 10 tonnes of concrete per hour. This is an incredible amount. However, it remains to be seen how much of this fantastic speed our customers are actually capable of utilising in practice having in mind that the recipes and materials handling equipment must be capable of matching such speed,” Jacob Jorgensen, Technical Manager, 3D Printhuset added. “So far, we have seen prints with a speed up to 30cm per second, but as our customers become more experienced, we believe they will be able to utilise even more of the speed that our printer offers them.”
To help customers assess the costs involved with taking on a BOD2 construction printer, 3D Printhuset has developed a wall price calculator. This calculator is based on 14 input factors, and allows customers to establish the precise cost price of any project involving the construction of walls with 3D printing.
