3D Builder app 2
A 3D-printed train engine model being scanned and altered using the 3D Builder app
3D Builder, the three-dimensional scanning app ran by Microsoft, has been made available on Windows 10 mobile devices and Xbox One consoles.
The app was first released on Windows 10 PCs in 2014, but it can now be downloaded for free on mobile devices. Allowing users more platforms to print 3D content, the app can even by used by those without a 3D printer. Online 3D printing service, i.materialise offer their services to those without their own 3D printer. Since Windows phones are not yet compatible with all 3D printers, i.materialise will again be available to print the user’s selected object.
Microsoft informed the public of the decision to make the app available on Windows mobile devices at its hardware event in October.
The 3D Builder mobile app enables the user to scan an object with the phone’s camera. The user just needs to take a few photos of the object from a number of different angles. 3D Builder then does the rest, processing the photos and creating the 3D design. Then, the user can select their method of printing and have the 3D model within a few hours with the use of their own printer, or a few days thanks to i.materialise.
3D Builder is also supported by several of the most common 3D formats currently in use. These include 3MF, STL, OBJ, PLY and WRL (VRML) files. Additionally, users have access to a built-in library, which allows people to share models they have previously 3D-printed. The app also refines objects, adding a base to uneven objects and smoothing rough edges, and can also emboss any model with additional text or images.
It is also thought that Microsoft’s Windows 10 Creators Update, set for early next year, will focus on 3D features. Thus meaning the 3D Builder app could see a significant enhancement just a couple of months after its launch earlier this month.
