The MTC has been chosen as ASTM International's European partner.
The Manufacturing Technology Centre has been chosen by ASTM International, a leading global standards organisation, to be the first non-US founding partner of their Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing.
The Centre of Excellence aims to become a global innovation hub that addresses additive manufacturing (AM) needs through development of technical standards, R&D, education and training, and more. The Coventry-based centre saw off major international competition to be chosen as ASTM International's European partner which will involve a funded project to advance AM standards and innovation in Europe and beyond.
Dr Mohsen Seifi, ASTM's international director of global additive manufacturing programmes, said: "The MTC's proposal was one of the highest ranked among dozens of proposals submitted. Clearly the MTC will play a key role in achieving the vision of filling industry gaps in standardisation and driving innovation on a global scale.”
The MTC houses the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing (NCAM) bringing together the most comprehensive combination of equipment and capability in the UK, and is also home to the European Space Agency's AM benchmarking centre.
MTC technical director, Professor Ken Young said, "We are excited to join this vitally important effort to build a strong technical foundation for the future of additive manufacturing. As well as recognising the MTC's leadership in the field of additive manufacturing, it adds further credibility to the additive manufacturing apprenticeships and training courses developed by our Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre."
The collaboration was announced at the first meeting of the Centre of Excellence's R&D team at Auburn University, which was also attended by the US Federal Aviation Administration, the National Institute for Standards and Technology and NASA.
