The six students chosen take part in Renishaw's Engineering Experience.
Renishaw has selected six A Level students from across the country to take part in the company’s Engineering Experience this week, including a hands-on tour of some of the UK’s top engineering businesses.
The initiative inspires young people to consider an engineering career by providing them with practical insight into the different opportunities a career in engineering can offer them. The participants are the winners of a competition Renishaw organised in partnership with the charity Young Engineers, which promotes engineering to UK students aged seven to nineteen through practical experiences.
The budding engineers are taking part in a week-long residential which began at Renishaw’s Miskin site near Cardiff, for a computer coding exercise and a tour of the facility including its new Healthcare Centre of Excellence. At the end of the week the students will visit Renishaw’s headquarters near Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire for technical demonstrations and a hands-on technology teardown.
The students will be visit several UK engineering companies including British Airways Maintenance, EDF Energy, BBC Bristol, Rolls Royce, Bouygues and Bristol-based animation studio, Aardman Studios.
”Engineering companies can sometimes struggle to inspire young people,” explained Julie Collins, Renishaw’s Education Liaison Manager. “By creating a meaningful and positive experience early on, Renishaw hopes to encourage more young people to consider a STEM-based career.”
“The Renishaw Engineering Experience is a valuable way for students to learn the ropes of a career in engineering directly from some of the most talented engineers, graduates and apprentices in the UK,” explained Rod Edwards, Chief Executive of Young Engineers. “The competition has now run for four years and we have seen great results in terms of participants being able to make considered career choices based on their week-long experiences.”
