Sony and Sculpteo partner
Yesterday’s social media activity was dominated by the introduction of new Apple technology, the company’s event generating more than 6 million separate conversations on twitter, for example.
Among them were three smartphones, and they were boasting features like ‘FaceID’, wireless charging and a 5.8 inch OLED ‘super retina display’ screen.
One of their many competitors in a thriving market, though one generating far fewer tweets, admittedly, is the Sony Xperia XZ1. It was launched at the recent IFA 2017 event and one of its stand-out features was its 3D Creator app enabling fast and easy 3D scans. Sony explained how the scanned 3D objects could be sent to friends on social media as a ‘3D sticker’, or even sent to a 3D printer to build it as a real-life object. It caught the attention of a leading online 3D printing service, who will help to make the transition from 3D Creator scan to 3D printed part even easier.
Today, Sculpteo announced its partnership with Sony, which will enable users of the Sony Xperia XZ1 to use the Sculpteo service to print their scans. Through the pre-installed 3D Creator app, users will be able to capture items, objects, and even humans to create a 360-degree scan in under a minute. By sending the file to Sculpteo, the company will oblige to print the object and send the built part to ‘anywhere in the world’. The object can be printed in multicolour material, in a number of predefined sizes, and payment is made directly from the app.
Since its foundation in 2009, Scultpeo has grown to become a major influence in the 3D market, catering for those who require prototypes and end-use parts, as well as providing an annual market assessment of the additive manufacturing industry. As human infatuation with smartphone technology remains commonplace, Sculpteo has outlined it as a market it can target to some benefit at least – and vice versa for Sony and the 3D scanning and 3D printing space.
“By becoming a built-in part of our precious smartphones, 3D printing is continuing its generalisation and helping to further eradicate the boundaries between the digital and the real world,” commented Clement Moreau, co-founder of Sculpteo.
A company blog post continued: “It comes as a great honour to confirm another important collaboration with Sony. It is not only for Sculpteo’s expertise in 3D printing in multi-coloured materials that Sculpteo has been chosen but also because of the user friendliness of its APIs that is trusted by big companies to provide high-quality customer experience in 3D printing. This new partnership confirms its leadership in the online 3D printing market, as well as its capacity for mass production while also being able to adapt to each individual request.”
