Shapeways, the online 3D printing service, has partnered with DyeMansion, a post-processing solution provider, to develop a beta program for surface finishing strong and flexible prints.
Using DyeMansion’s Powershot S automated blasting system, Shapeways believe their printed parts now reach a sufficient enough quality to be of functional use. In a blog post on the Shapeways website, the company highlights the smoothness of products to be one of the biggest constraints for those operating 3D printers. Through this new partnership, Shapeways is confident of delivering a solution that sees to those restraints, and does so with no added cost or production time.

“Shapeways is excited to announce a partnership with DyeMansion which is solving the post-production challenges for powder-based 3D printing systems,” said Blair Georgakas, Product Manager, 3D Printing Materials. “With the Powershot S system, we are now getting closer to the quality level expected from traditional manufacturing for end-use products.”
For members of the Shapeways Beta group, the new finishing service is available today. Models made in Black, Red, or Blue Strong & Flexible plastic (or HP Black Strong & Flexible) are automatically finished using this new method. Shapeways is planning to expand the scope of support for materials to include all the other colours in their Strong & Flexible product family, dependant on positive feedback from the beta group.

DyeMansion says its finishing technique is compatible with every geometry, improving the functionality of a part, as well as its aesthetics. The two companies are set to continue their partnership as Shapeways look to expand the capabilities of its beta program.
DyeMansion is a specialist company in the post-processing of 3D prints. Founded in Germany, the company recently secured a facility in North America, thanks to its success in the German Accelerator Tech Program’s Hardware Round.
