Sketchfab, one of most popular platforms for 3D models on the web, has announced a new feature which is set to bring a whole new dimension to 3D models.
Animation Preview offers a completely fresh way of interacting with 3D models by providing them with the additional feature of motion. According to a blog post, Sketchfab says the new tool is one of the most requested features from its community and is currently in the hands of a select few beta testers.
Budding animators can request to join the beta program which allows users too upload animated models with bones or solids in FBX format. The feature will soon be rolled out to the rest of the community.
Alban Denoyel, Sketchfab CEO, commented: “Animation support is a huge step for Sketchfab as a product, it’s pretty much a 4th dimension. It means you can now tell mini interactive stories and share them anywhere online. We want to be the best place for your 3D files, so we will continue to improve Sketchfab as you push creative boundaries. I can’t wait to see what you show and tell with animations!”

Sketchfab recently secured $7 Million Series A funding led by FirstMark Capital to build an online platform for 3D printing, virtual reality and augmented reality content. The fast-growing site has already shared over 300,000 files to date and is set to become an integral part of the 3D ecosystem as the popularity of technologies like 3D printing and VR/AR continues to grow.
The company has huge global names such as HTC, Photoshop, Microsoft and Blizzard that have either already integrated or pledged their support for Sketchfab, which they hope will prove valuable in its goal to become a market leader.
