Stage One, the digital manufacturing company who created the London 2012 Olympic Cauldron, has announced the launch of Fluxaxis, a 3D printing start-up.
With an initial investment of £1 million Fluxaxis will enable UK companies to explore the potential of 3D printing, 3D scanning, CNC machining and 3D design for digital manufacturing purposes.
Fluxaxis has been established to achieve Stage One’s goal to redefine the future of making with an already substantial range of 3D printing, scanning and CNC platforms. Among Fluxaxis’ collection is HP’s JetFusion 4200; a Massivit 1800; Stratasys Fortus 900mc and 250mc; a Steinbichler Comet L3D Scanner; and a Poseidon 5-Axis CNC Machining Centre. Boasting this range of technology, Fluxaxis believes it will be able to 3D print at large scale for almost any application at an incredibly fast rate.
Edwin Stokes, director of Fluxaxis, believes the potential for 3D printing is huge, since so many players in so many industries are considering the technology as a viable solution.

“Designers, marketers, architects, manufacturers, retailers, film and theatre companies. Everyone is exploring how 3D print can enrich their productions,” said Stokes. “By removing technical barriers we are enabling a new creative and fast-track approach, uninhibited by scale and intricacy.
“The best machines mean nothing if you don’t know what to do with them. We combine the technology of the future with Stage One’s experience in creative production to open up new opportunities for businesses both in the UK and globally. Prototypes and production parts that, until now, have been too complex in form to manufacture, can now be made quickly and precisely using a range of cutting edge equipment, all under one roof.”

With the company now up and running, Fluxaxis is calling on digital artists and designers to enter into a competition, launched in collaboration with York Mediale. The residency programme, set to run from September 2017 to February 2018, seeks to find an artist or collective with experience in critical making and 3D printing. Entrants must propose an idea or project that reflects what the artist is interested in. Selected artist(s) will receive a £5,000 fee and obtain access to Fluxaxis’ equipment and expertise to develop ideas and practices. During the residency the artist(s) will be able to develop their idea, showing their workings at regular intervals through a series of artist talks, workshops and public events. Applicants must submit a written statement, portfolio and initial artistic proposal. The deadline for applicants is 17th July 2017.
Stage One is a creative construction and manufacturing company working within the architecture, theatre and events industries. Collaborating with some of the world’s most creative minds, including Zaha Hadid, Thomas Heatherwick and RSH+P, it uses digital technologies alongside traditional skills to create complex forms. In addition to Stage One’s development of the London 2012 Olympic Cauldron, the company’s notable successes include the construction of each of the Serpentine pavilions since 2009.
