John Burn Ltd, UK & Ireland distributors for EnvisionTEC 3D printing technologies was invited to attend the renaming of the Royal Academy of Engineering by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The Royal Academy of Engineering is delighted that its newly renovated ’Forum for Engineering’ is to be named Prince Philip House, in honour of its Senior Fellow HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who formally opened the building on Tuesday 16 October 2012.
John Burn Ltd was asked to showcase the latest 3D printing technology in a celebration of engineering innovation. The Duke discussed the principles of 3D printing, during the event, and was particularly interested in a question mark that had been 3D printed by the latest EnvisionTEC Micro 3D printer. The question mark was produced by request of the Academy in recognition of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.
The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering is a new global engineering prize that will reward and celebrate an individual (or up to three individuals) responsible for a ground-breaking innovation in engineering that has been of global benefit to humanity.
The first winner of the £1million prize will be selected by a distinguished and eminent panel of judges from across the world. The prize will be presented by HM the Queen in the spring of 2013.
Sir John Parker GBE FREng, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, said: “As our Senior Fellow, The Duke of Edinburgh has worked tirelessly to support the Academy right from its inception as the Fellowship of Engineering, which he was instrumental in creating in 1976. We are now a fully-fledged national Academy of some 1,500 Fellows, working in partnership with government, business, the engineering profession and our universities to promote the engineering and technological welfare of the UK.
“Prince Philip House will be a great asset for our country, providing a national platform for engineering – where we can all come together and address the issues that matter. Global issues including sustainability, skills, equality and diversity, health, water and energy supplies and, crucially, economic growth.”
