3D printing has taken centre stage on the big screen in countless ways over the last few years. From stop motion animation in The Pirates! Band of Misfits to the escape pod in Marvel’s latest outing, Guardians of the Galaxy, the technology has proved groundbreaking in various areas of film.
The latest movie to take advantage of this burgeoning technology is The Boxtrolls, an animated film from ParaNorman maker’s Laika Studios. Using a demanding stop-motion process, the film has been produced using 3D models that have helped to speed up the animation process and seamlessly animate the supposedly monstrous Boxtrolls.
Using 3D Systems’ full-colour ProJet 660Pro 3D printer, the characters were painted during the printing process allowing for more subtle expressions to be executed without any jarring,
Further pushing the advantages of using 3D printable digital files, the studio has given fans the freedom to print their own Boxtrolls at home.
Laika has released the character files for the wonderfully named Shoe, Oil Can, Fragile and Fish, which can be downloaded for free and printed on a desktop machine or through Cubify’s cloud printing service.
The Boxtrolls will hit cinemas later this month on 26th September.
