Open Source Element Dress
There's even more 3D printed fashion here at Prsnlz with a dress made from 3D pieces from all over the world. The Open Source Element Dress is a unique example of playing with open source 3D printed files to create something that breaks barriers of geography and opens up opportunities for collaboration.
The idea comes from “fashionable technology” artist, designer and curator, Anouk Wipprecht who hopes to invent a dress that is not just created by a designer but by the entire world. All you need is basic 3D modelling skills and access to a 3D printer.
The dress will be made up of 150 3D printed elements which will be designed by contributors across the globe. Following a base particle design, contributors are asked to customise the piece by redesigning the top layer with their own unique design or simply printing in a different colour. Measurements must be kept to the specifications of the original design so that the pieces can be attached together easily.
The designer has put together a set of step-by-step instructions to help makers design their pieces. Inspiration from natural objects is encouraged including things like shells, environments and the elements. Yet, Anouk also encourages contributors to put something to represent themselves on their piece such as text or a symbol. Anouk experimented with LEDs to add a further element to the design and give artists inspiration for designing in a tech orientated way.
Once designed, the particles will then printed off and posted to the designer so that they can be assembled to make the dress. The project will launch during Vienna Fashion Week from 13th-14th September.
