Oxford Performance Materials (OPM), the company that recently had their OsteoFab Patient Specific Cranial Device (OPSCD) approved by the Food and Drugs Administration, have taken the next step in bringing their 3D printed skull implants to the mass market by partnering with industry leading orthopedic company Biomet.
The OPSCD builds implants out of PEKK polymer based on a patient's specific MRI or CT Scan. As opposed to traditional mould-based manufacturing processes the OPSCD creates the implants in a matter of hours as opposed to weeks, potentially saving lives and money. The PEKK polymer used is also clinically proven to help aid cell repair more effectively than traditional titanium implants.
OPM have signed a deal which sees Biomet take exclusive global distribution rights to the OPSCD and OsteoFab implants, “Following the universally positive response from our initial clients, it is with great satisfaction that we announce this global strategic cooperation with Biomet,” said Scott DeFelice, President and CEO of OPM. “We concluded that Biomet was the best partner based upon their existing product mix, global market presence, exceptional focus on Patient-Specific solutions, and clear reputation as a technological leader within the cranial and orthopedic industries.”
Biomet and its subsidiaries distribute products in 90 countries throughout the globe, their company motto is “One surgeon. One patient”. Earlier in the year it was huge news when the two companies combined to perform the first clinical application of the 3D printed skull implants in the United States earlier this year; successfully replacing 75% of a man’s skull.
