When adopting and integrating additive technologies into the manufacturing process, several considerations must be made - materials, design, optimisation, cost effectiveness, skills and training, speed, reliability, post processing ... the list goes on.
Many organisations often do not have the full necessary in-house expertise to address those questions, and a number of misconceptions and “myths” can hamper or misguide the adoption process.
Following on from a successful panel session on materials for AM at last year's TCT Show, TCT will once again be teaming up with Women in 3D Printing and Cyant to discuss and dispel those very myths and realities of AM in another #3DTalk panel, at RAPID + TCT in Fort Worth.
The Panelists
Our panelists combine a wealth of research and practical experience in academic, industry and public settings and will share valuable insights and lessons learned. The panel will be moderated by myself and Barbara Hanna, PhD, Founding CEO and Cyantist at Cyant.
Stacey DelVecchio, Additive Manufacturing Product Manager - Caterpillar Inc.
Leveraging AM technology in all spaces, including New Product Introduction, supply chain and operations, DelVecchio's team is focused on working with Caterpillar product groups on design for additive manufacturing (AM). DelVecchio manages Caterpillar's Additive Manufacturing Factory which has a wide range of printing capabilities. In her 29 years at Caterpillar, DelVecchio has held numerous positions in engineering and manufacturing. DelVecchio holds a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. She was the 2013-2014 president of the Society of Women Engineers and named a fellow of the society in 2015. DelVecchio is the secretary of the Women in Engineering Committee for the World Federation of Engineering Organization, representing the American Association of Engineering Societies and is championing global expansion of the Society of Women Engineers.
Dr. Amy Elliott, Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) - Oak Ridge National Lab
Dr. Elliot specialises in inkjet-based AM and meets with industry from across the nation to consult them on strategic application of 3D printing technology. She conducts research in conjunction with industry efforts in the area of binder jetting, through which she explores new material systems in ceramics and metals. Dr. Elliott has two patents and several patents pending in addition to numerous publications related to AM. As part of her role at the MDF, Dr. Elliott supports Deloitte’s MOOC (Massive Online Open Course), “Additive Manufacturing for Business Leaders,” as an on-camera host and course instructor. Other on-camera activities include serving as an expert for Science Channel’s Outrageous Acts of Science and hosting a web series called RoboNation TV.
Jennifer Fielding, PhD, Technical Advisor, Propulsion, Structures, and Manufacturing Enterprise Branch - Air Force Research Laboratory
Fielding has been with the Air Force Research Laboratory for 10 years, during which she performed hands-on research and program management in diverse fields such as polymer-matrix-composites processing, nanomaterials and multifunctional materials. She holds a doctorate and master’s degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Florida. Currently, Fielding is the deputy program manager for the defense-wide Manufacturing S&T Program for OSD ManTech, which seeks to develop game changing manufacturing technologies that apply to more than one service. She is also the program manager for the America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute.
Miheala Vlasea, PhD, Assistant Professor - University of Waterloo
Dr. Vlasea is an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering Department and the Associate Research Director of the Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing Laboratory. Her research focuses on innovative design, process optimisation and adoption of new materials for powder bed fusion and powder bed binder jetting AM processes.
The research goals are to bridge the technological gaps necessary to improve part quality, process repeatability and reliability.
