Tethon 3D has launched its Bison 1000 desktop digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing system and will showcase the platform at RAPID + TCT in Detroit.
Operating out of Nebraska, the company has been developing and commercialising ceramic resins and powders for 3D printing since 2014, but in the last year has moved to deliver its own 3D printing system optimised for ceramic and metal materials. Though Tethon’s portfolio of ceramic resins are hardware agnostic, the company felt it important that a DLP machine designed specifically to process ceramics was required.
The result is the Bison 1000, which has been used by Tethon 3D to develop new resins in-house. All Tethon resins currently available are processable on the Bison 1000 and have been enhanced to ensure finished parts are denser and shrink less during sintering. Users will also have the ability to adjust the settings and use other materials if they wish. Meanwhile, the Bison 1000 boasts a 110 x 60 x 130 mm build volume, and has a heated vat which reduces resin viscosity and helps to safeguard the quality of parts printed with higher-loaded materials. An internal camera allows for remote monitoring via a mobile app.
Tethon 3D’s Bison 1000 is expected to start shipping in Q3 of 2019. While it ignites the company’s move into hardware, Tethon is keen to emphasis its primary focus – the development 3D printing materials – will continue. The Bison 1000 will not only assist in printing parts in materials optimised for the machine, but Tethon expects researchers and material scientists to take advantage of the system to develop ceramic resins and help explore the possibilities with metal materials.
“While Tethon 3D is launching hardware, we are still fully focused on material development,” commented Trent Allen, Tethon 3D President. “This includes continuing to provide material services to other hardware manufacturers. We see significant growth in both the ceramic and metal markets and a large part of our business will be developing different materials for current and future industry partners. While not immediately available, we have plans to include other materials like zirconia, bronze, and stainless steel to our material portfolio.
“The Bison 100 was also built for the researchers who desperately crave an open material platform. Our clients will use Tethon 3D’s Genesis resin to 3D print with their own Silicon Carbide, Thorium Dioxide, Silicon Nitride, and other ceramic/ metal powders.”
Tethon 3D will showcase the Bison 1000 machine for the first time at RAPID + TCT from Booth #1157.
