Portlanida gets the 3D printing treatment
The Mayor unveils the official Portland 3D Printer
Portlandia, the hit sketch show from SNL’s Fred Armisen and grunge guitarist Carrie Brownstein, is known for punching the zeitgeist right in the nose. If you sell ‘artisan’ this. ‘handcrafted’ that and anything else that is in the least bit hipster, they’ve either been for or are coming for you.
A particular favourite was a swipe aimed at the Kickstarter generation. With Kickstarter, artisan lightbulbs and bird-based boutiques taken care of, it was only a matter of time before Fred and Carrie set their beady eyes on the 3D printing trend. Tonight is the night.
At the end of the third season the Mayor (Twin Peaks star Kyle MacLachlan) left his paper printer, Prints, running and forgot to pay the electricity bill causing a citywide blackout. The penultimate episode of series four airs tonight on IFC and the Mayor’s at it again though this time he’s 3D printing!
As we can see above, like anybody else who gets a 3D printer the first thing he wants to print is himself, as the crackpot mayor unveils Portland’s official 3D printer. It appears as if the 3D printer is going to have a major role to play in the episode as it is the titular character and even gets its own tent card.
To celebrate the episode the official Portlandia blog has listed nine amazing things made with 3D printers. Though we’re pretty sure list websites have either come in for or at least will come in for some stick themselves in Portlandia’s life time and the list does seem to run out of steam towards the end.
The episode is on IFC this evening for all our Stateside readers, the rest of us will just have to wait until series four hits Netflix in the coming months.
