Sometimes it appears as though there is a new 3D printer being released everyday. Or a least a new KickStarter project to fund one. With so much choice and so much variation in price and specification, what’s the best way to compare each printer?
This is something that has been troubling me for a long time. There are certain vital statistics that each manufacturer can send out — build volume, layer thickness, material choices etc — but that tends to be bundled up with some marketing fluff, a glib comment or two and some impossible to prove but highly plausible statements.
As part of our role as the hub for all things 3D printing, prsnlz.me would like to benchmark existing systems and new offerings against some sort of ‘industy standard’. The good news is that as a community we get to make the standard up. The bad news is that we have to hope the machine makers are willing to play ball — which they should if they have nothing to hide, right.
For starters I want to know what it is that you need to know before making the purchase of a new printer. Veterans: is there something that you thought was important first time around that you now don’t? Or was there something major you wished you had known?
