At formnext powered by tct earlier this month, global science company DSM announced the expansion of its additive manufacturing business, building on more than 20 years’ experience with its Somos brand and combining all existing DSM businesses, to offer a wider 3D printing materials portfolio under DSM Additive Manufacturing.
The company announced its expansion alongside partner Toyota Motorsport GmbH, which DSM is working with as “One DSM” to develop materials for the automotive sector. TCT spoke to Hugo Da Silva, VP of Additive Manufacturing at DSM, and Gerard Winstanley, Manager Future Production Technologies & Processes, Fabrication and Additive Manufacturing at TMG, about the partnership and why the company has decided to go beyond stereolithography and turn to solutions in Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Multi Jet Fusion, Ink Jet and Binder Jet processes.
Hugo commented: “We want to serve the best applications and I think only one technology can not get across all of the existing applications in 3D printing. The idea is to combine FDM, SLA and any other technology to best serve the market.
Gerard added: “This “One DSM” approach works so well with us because we have all three of those technologies in house and it’s always better to speak to one partner. We already have a lot of experience with the Somos brand, using stereolithography in research and development of their materials for our applications in motorsport but we’re also looking into detail in the FFF approach, the SLS powders that are being developed by the engineering plastics group under this one AM DSM approach where we are now looking at applications that will influence the automotive industry direct.”
