Jumping the gun
In the hours since Obama mentioned 3D printing in the State of the Union address there’s been a scramble by the mainstream news agencies to push a story on 3D printing.
Fox News, in traditional sensational style, ran this story on how Obama’s proposed gun law restrictions could be scuppered by the very technology he is so heavily backing.
Suggesting that in the not too distant future people will be printing off their own personal arsenal seems a little like typical tabloid scaremongering, as is always the case with new technology.
It’s not just Fox who are jumping the (ahem) gun, Richard A. D'Aveni of the Harvard Business Review has been suggesting today that 3D printing could lead to the downfall of China as a manufacturing superpower. The article is called ‘3D Printing will change the world’, not ‘3D printing might change the world’.
It’s easy to get carried away with the Star Trek visions of the future but the safety remains firmly on this weapon of mass production.
