Layer By Layer
3D printing is the process of laying down material layer by layer… how many times have you read this 3D printing 101 in total? I Must be reaching a million by now, so when I received an email called Layer by Layer my eyes immediately rolled to the back of my head, another description of how 3D printing works? Fortunately not.
Layer By Layer is the latest 3D printing marketplace to attempt to carve out a slice of the 3D printing pie. Along with the usual buying and selling of 3D models Layer by Layer promises much more with their USP InstaPrint.
InstaPrint is the feature Layer By Layer hope will set them apart from the competition, “Instead of downloading or slicing files on their computers, users can purchase a single-print of their desired product just by clicking “Print!” This new approach to 3D printing shifts the focus away from the design-download model typical of other 3D design sites.”
The idea behind it is that their software will do away with the slicing and complimenting software, their files will be sent automatically to a printer, doing all the hard work so you don’t have to.
Users can choose from a variety of high-quality, pre-sliced products, such as: a collection of puzzles that are impossible to create with traditional manufacturing methods by Oskar van Deventer; a few of Pixil 3D’s star products, like their Antlers Rack Set; and a Quadcopter.
“We want to make 3D printing more accessible, and more useful to non-technical users. We thought this was the best way—to provide users with a central marketplace where they can easily find products, and then instantly print them out at home,” said Co-Founder and CEO Jonathan Schwartz.
At this moment in time the BETA version is only working for MakerBot machines but they will be adding more over a period of time, depending on the amount of requests they receive.
