When we spoke to some of the UK’s biggest 3D printing services last month they told us that one of the most common requests from customers were 3D printed Daft Punk helmets. Of course, those people are usually shocked to hear their wish might end up costing them several hundred pounds for a bespoke replica.
However, a step by step guide on Adafruit, the online marketplace for learning electronics and making, has surfaced today to show you how to 3D print your own wearable replica at home with LEDs.
The open source design can be downloaded and then customised to fit your individual needs. The helmet is printed using transparent PLA so that LED lights can be added to get the full effect. These can be purchased from the site along with a handy circuit diagram showing how it all fits together.
The design took three days and over about 1.2 pounds of filament to print. As the video demonstrates, to finish the front of the mask was covered with masking tape so that the helmet could be sprayed gold leaving the tinted plastic on show.
This cool project requires a large build area as the helmet measures 246mm x 226mm x 250 mm and the ability to build a circuit and solder. Instructions can be found here.
