As soon as Microsoft announced that their latest operating system Windows 8.1 would include native support for 3D printing, we sniffed a partnership a coming round the mountain.
It was obvious when Microsoft’s Vice-President, Antoine Leblond demonstrated the new OS feature on a MakerBot Replicator 2 that said partnership was going to be the with Brooklyn-based outfit.
Microsoft are now installing “The MakerBot Experience” at 18 of their stores throughout the US. Stretching the width of the country from Connecticut to San Diego you can now visit a Microsoft store, witness 3D Printing in action, buy supplies and now even pick up a machine and walk out with it.
The MakerBot Experience underwent a successful trial in three outlets and now Microsoft stores are the only full line stores outside of MakerBot’s own NYC store where you can purchase a MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer in person and take it home the same day.
This huge retail presence now only serves to enhance MakerBot’s stance as he most recognisable desktop 3D printer on the market. What does come as a surprise is the relationship between what some deem as a failing OS and an upcoming tech company, especially one that has previous been called ‘The Apple of 3D printing.”
