Nervous System
Massachusetts based, Nervous System is a generative design company that works with science, art and technology and uses pattern-generating computer algorithms to design bio-inspired jewellery. With the use of Selective Laser Sintering the final design is built up layer by layer in a durable nylon plastic. A 3D printer then uses the organic forms found in materials such as nylon, plastic and stainless steel to create the pieces of jewellery. They do offer the option of having pieces of jewellery dyed black, red, or 3D printed in silver. In the silver process, the piece is build by 3D printing using wax, and then it is cast and hand finished.
Founders Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg wrote on their website: ‘‘we use inexpensive materials and believe that the value of our designs comes from an intelligent and beautiful marriage of form and function, not the current price of currency standards.’’ Because Nervous System’s manufacturing process doesn’t require massive manual labor, or high transportation costs the company are able to offer ethical and unique affordable jewellery.
Cell Cycle, the company’s first line of 3D-printed jewellery was introduced in 2009 and consisted of only bracelets and rings. Cell Cycle is a collection of 3D jewellery inspired by the microscopic shells of radiolarians. Designs are available in 3D-printed nylon, 3D-printed stainless steel and sterling silver cast from 3D-printed wax.
Their custom cell cycle app allows users to determine if they want to make a ring, a bracelet, or a more abstract object. Users are able to adjust the interior diameter, exterior diameter, twist and curves, and overall thickness. You can also adjust the general shape of your chosen product by dragging on points from the 2D drawing.
