In case you’ve not noticed the world’s biggest sporting event is a mere ten days away, and as over 800 million people tune their television sets to watch the World Cup in Brazil big brand marketing departments go into overdrive to get their logos seen as often as humanly possible.
The first to turn to the 3D printing zeitgeist in marketing for the World Cup is Nike, who have used the technology to produce three bespoke bags for three of the world’s best players – or three of the world’s best players who wear Nike…
Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar Jr will all be looking to light up the tournament over the next few weeks and Nike hope that all eyes will be looking to those players as they disembark their team coach clutching the state-of-the-art duffel bag.
The base of the bag is printed in sintered nylon and mimics the lattice style of nike’s football boots –Mercurial and the Magista. The sintered base slots seamlessly together with premium leather upper without the use of adhesive, the premium look is enhanced by the gold plated name tag which is personalised for each player.
“We wanted to create something that was truly special for the game’s greatest players,” said Martin Lotti, Creative Director for Nike Football. “We did this by utilizing one of the most cutting-edge technologies – 3D printing – to make a bag that is unlike anything else.”
As one would expect from Nike’s premium range the bag certainly looks the part but the name ‘Rebento’, which is Portuguese for “explode”, might not be the best brand name to be displaying as you go through Brazilian airport security…
