The Prometheus System.
As far as most Kickstarter campaigns go, it’s all or nothing. They’re either an immediate success, surpassing target in a matter or hours, or they tend to plateau and never quite make that final push over the finish line.
DisTech has just achieved the former, nearly quadrupling its Kickstarter goal of $10,000 in less than a day for its intuitive multi-filament 3D printer upgrade, The Prometheus System.
The product is said to be a revolutionary extrusion system that expands the capabilities of any low-cost 3D printer with multi-material, multi-colour capabilities via a single hot end.
As frequent 3D printer users will know only too well, often multi-material machines are prone to colour contamination or that unfortunate stringy effect due to hot filament dripping from an idle nozzle in dual extrusion systems. This alternative single extrusion system is said to eliminate these and many other common issues.
The Prometheus System is made up of three pieces of hardware; DisTech’s popular Prometheus V2 All-Metal Hot End, a customisable single piece hot end that can be attached to any 3D printer; the ProStruder driven by a 5:1 geared stepper motor to create a fully constrained filament path through the extruder; and a multi-filament ProFeeder which directs filament from two extruders in a single path to allow seamless switching of materials by retracting and feeding filament into the single hot end.

The single input hot end means that previous colour is completely purged from the nozzle during colour switching with means no colour contamination or backflow jamming.
With this add-on, users can print in anything from glow in the dark to composite structures and examples on the Kickstarter page show a wide variety of options for users looking to print in two colours or materials with good results.
With 29 days left to go, there are just a few early bird Prometheus kits left for potential backers, starting at $189 with other packages starting at $219 still available. Follow the campaign here.
