Russian 3Doodler
With a bit more time it's easy to see how hackers and geeks alike could build their own 3D printing pen but what would you rather have?
It’s fair to say that the folks over at Russian technology blog Habrahr.ru aren’t too impressed with the runaway train that is 3Doodler. Suggesting that the 3D printing pen could be fashioned within 20 minutes and the success of 3Doodler is down to “fluffy” marketing plus the fact that it is on Kickstarter.
Take a look at their efforts in the gallery (We’ve redacted some curse words); for something knocked up in no time at all they’re pretty impressive. The poll in the blog shows that readers of Habrahr.ru are not too impressed with the 3Doodler either, 72% of voters say “I am not interested in such device”.
However, being a technology blog Habrahr.ru readers are more than likely predisposed not to like anything they see as simple tech sold in a nice casing. There’s not really a balance in the argument, many simple successful products even ones that haven’t been the first to the punch like Facebook, owe a great deal to presentation and user-friendliness.
What is undeniable is the mass-market appeal of the 3Doodler, search for "3D Printing Pen" on twitter and you’ll get the picture, you don’t have to be revolutionary to be successful. We’ve seen with the success of the Makerbots and 3DSystem’s Cube over the DIY Rep-rap printers, consumers want a finished product. And at $75 dollars it is hardly like you have to break the bank, there’s no mention of how much the components cost in the Russian model.
It’s easy to detract from what the 3Doolder can do, and yes the timing of the Kickstarter project may have had a smattering of luck what with Kickstarter being as trendy as it is, but which would you rather have this… or this? Tell us below!
