Global chemical company, SABIC has launched its new LEXAN EXL AMHI240F filament at formnext powered by TCT as it aims to ‘help expand the application space for additive manufacturing.’
Based on the company’s LEXAN EXL polycarbonate copolymer technology, which delivers high impact performance and low temperature ductility, the new filament has been introduced to address the need for higher-performing materials in the industrial sector. It has been designed for use in Stratasys Fortus Classic industrial printers and in demanding aerospace, consumer electronics, and automotive applications. SABIC has also confirmed the LEXAN EXL AMHI240F will be the first of a range of materials with ‘distinctive’ performance characteristics to be launched in the next 12 months.
The LEXAN EXL AMHI1240F filament boasts a high level of toughness and improved ductility at room temperature and temperatures down to 30°C. SABIC says, depending on print orientation, the material delivers up to four times better notched Izod impact at room temperature, and three times better at -30°C, when compared to standard PC. It also has a heat deflection temperature of 140°C, which is higher than that of general-purpose ABS filaments.
Complying with Underwriters Laboratories’ UL94 V-O flammability standard at 3.0mm in flat (XY) and on-edge (XZ) orientations, SABIC believes the material is suitable for a broad range of demanding applications.
“LEXAN EXL AMHI240F filament is an excellent example of how SABIC is delivering on its promise to help our customers lead the additive manufacturing industry into the future by providing the high-performance filament technologies they need to succeed,” said Stephanie Gathman, director, Emerging Applications, SABIC. “By raising the bar with new additive manufacturing products that perform better than currently available materials, we are opening up new possibilities and allowing OEMs to meet the specification requirements of their applications.”
Available for sampling, the LEXAN EXL AMHI240F is initially offered in black, with plans to launch additional colours, including white, in the near future. Next year, SABIC will also introduce filaments based on ULTEM polyetherimide (PEI) and EXTEM thermoplastic polyimide (TPI) resins.
In the meantime, SABIC is exhibiting in Hall 3.1, G78 at formnext powered by TCT.
