The Screw You Dog
Despite what you’re thinking about the headline I haven’t gone into meltdown and decided to sabotage my whole career by abusing you, the reader. Screw You is actually a fantastic little 3D printed design collection using screw caps hence the name.
The collection comes from the Dutch design label Layers, set-up by independent product designer David Graas. Graas founded Layers to be a 3D printing specific design company after seeing the technology become more frequently used in the wider product design world.
The Screw You collection makes use 3D printing to turn those empty recycled plastic bottles we use on a daily basis into works of art. Most plastic drink bottles use the same type of screw cap fitting, from 500ml bottles of Pepsi to 2ltr bottles of arch-rivals Coca-Cola, they tend to use that same plastis, one-size-fits-all screw cap.
The two most interesting designs in the collection are the Screw You Vase and the Screw You dog. Both use empty bottles to create a unique looking design for your home.
The vase is a nest of twelve 3D printed screw caps, which you screw 500ml bottles into. Making sure the three centre bottles are the same height you will now have a unique and eco-friendly vase for that bouquet of flowers a secret-admirer sent you in the office.
The Screw You Dog is a particular favourite, a way to turn those empty bottles into a dried food display unit shaped like a dog. Put your oregano, cumin, fennel or whatever combination of seven spices you wish into plastic bottles, screw them into the 3D printed design and voila you’ve got a spice rack shaped like a balloon dog!
The Dog and Vase along with the rest of the Screw You designs - which include a truck, bracelet and ring - will be on display at the Dutch Design Freak expo during Dutch Design week down at the Best Western Premier Art Hotel in Eindhoven. If these do not impress you then… well, SCREW YOU!
