DIYROCKETS
There’s an old Chinese proverb that says “two heads are better than one” though its actual translation is “Three unskilled cobblers are superior to one Zhuge Liang.” DIYROCKETS believe thousands of unskilled cobblers are better than one rocket scientist as they aim to crowdsource advancements in space exploration.
In conjunction with Sunglass, a cloud collaboration corporation, DIYROCKETS have launched the “World's First Collaborative 3D Printed Rocket Engine Design Competition”
Competitions have been a main stay for cost effective innovation, the Daily Mail’s aviation competitions in the early part of the 20th Centrury are accredited with the advancement of aviation; the first non-stop transatlantic flight was completed by a Daily Mail winner. This crowdsourcing of innovation is not uncommon in the 3D printing sphere either, recently we saw 83-year-old Hugh Lyman win a $40,000 prize for his entry into the Desktop Fabrication Competition.
The objective of DIYROCKET’s competition is to generate collaborative designs and business cases for safe, affordable 3D printed rocket engines that can carry between .5kg - 10 kg into Low Earth Orbit. The winner scoops a $5,000 kitty and is judged by experts from NASA, MIT and TED.
Is the 3D printing world about to open an exciting host of space exploration possibilities? One thing’s for sure, this IS rocket science!
